HISTORIC PROPERTY MANAGER

JOB TITLE: Historic Property Manager

REPORTS TO: Shearn Moody Plaza Director/Manager

JOB SUMMARY: Involved in day-to-day building and site operations at the historic Shearn Moody Plaza/Santa Fe Building at 125 Rosenberg. This multi-story commercial building includes private, public, and non-profit tenants under the supervision of a building director and manager. This position assists with all aspects of management and maintenance of the building and site. Position is responsible for ensuring that properties are cleaned, repaired, landscaped, maintained, and generally presented to the public in the best order possible.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Develops and maintains a weekly log for maintenance and repairs at Shearn Moody Plaza/Santa Fe Building. This includes but is not limited to yard and parking lot maintenance, repair and oversight, housekeeping, extermination, debris removal, fire and safety issues, and “make ready” preparations for tenants and related items.
  • Establish a daily and weekly inspection calendar for the care of these properties.
  • Works with building manager/director to identify property needs and develops a weekly work schedule.
  • Supervises building maintenance and repair services as needed.
  • Works with building manager/director to reduce costs and improve site maintenance.
  • Interacts with building tenants and visitors as needed.
  • Coordinates repair and rehabilitation projects under the direction of the building manager/director that may include drywall repair, painting, door and window repair, and other types of property improvement.
  • Coordinates building and site work with other GHF property managers, program managers and staff as needed.
  • Assists with special events (GHF Dickens on The Strand, Historic Homes Tour) as requested.
  • Assists with site interpretation as needed.
  • Assists with emergency preparedness and disaster response/recovery as needed.

EDUCATION: High school diploma.

SKILLS: Computer skills as well as an ability to communicate effectively in writing or speaking. Is independent, takes initiative, and accepts responsibility willingly. Creative and professional in representing GHF. Ability to repair drywall, plumbing, and fencing helpful. Skills in painting and texture of walls or other “make ready” skills are preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Experience in the management of historic properties preferred.

LIFTING REQUIREMENT: Applicant must be able to lift 50 to 75 lbs.

Position is open until filled. All applicants must be able to pass a background check before employment.

Galveston Historical Foundation is a 150-year-old non-profit organization committed to the preservation and interpretation of Galveston’s history, architecture, and maritime history. The organization owns or operates 25 historic properties in Galveston and manages five retail sites.

VISITOR SERVICES ASSOCIATE (VSA) - ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE WAREHOUSE

JOB TITLE: Visitor Services Association (VSA) – Architectural Salvage Warehouse Frontliner

REPORTS TO: Architectural Salvage Warehouse Manager

HOURLY RATE: $15/Hour

STATUS: Part-Time/Non-Exempt (30 hours or less/week)

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the daily operations of Galveston Historical Foundation ASW. Selling salvaged building supplies and providing information on historic Galveston. Assists with material salvage and pick-ups. Responsible for providing better than expected customer service. Prior sales experience, and/ or construction experience is desirable. Able to participate effectively as a member of a team. Accurately process sales transactions. 30 hours per week, maximum. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manages sales operation of ASW, keeping accurate records of transactions.
  • Manages restocking, inventory of retail merchandise and brochures, and general cleaning of the store
  • Manages the store’s visual merchandising
  • Processes new merchandise when it arrives, with assistance from other store staff.
  • Anticipates and acts on needs for cash drawer change and supplies.
  • Greets and assists visitors with information about Galveston with an emphasis on heritage tourism.
  • Assists visitors with purchases of admissions to GHF properties and retail purchases.
  • Answers telephone inquiries and assists with visitor inquiries.
  • Responsible for opening and closing procedures on days scheduled, including preparing the bank deposit, setting alarms or assigning that responsibility before leaving property at close.
  • Oversees end-of-day Point of Sale system reporting.
  • Works additional hours as needed during Homes Tour, Dickens on The Strand.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: High School diploma, or equivalent.

SKILLS: Friendly, outgoing personality combined with an ability to maintain grace and composure in stressful situations. Must be self-motivated. Ability to learn and communicate information about Galveston Historical Foundation and its attractions in a clear concise manner. Able to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and guests. Proficient with computerized Point of Sale system. Must have reliable transportation and ability to work scheduled hours on a regular basis. Bilingual ability a plus. Ability to lift 50-75 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: GHF is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization formed in 1954 that merged with the Galveston Historical Society created in 1871. The organization owns or manages approximately sixteen properties, vessels, and sites in Galveston. The Architectural Salvage Warehouse (ASW) sells historic building materials for the repair, rehabilitation, and preservation of Galveston’s built environment. All proceeds from our warehouse go towards operating funds for GHF Preservation and Conservation. We are located in the 1904 G H & H Depot at 33rd and Market. GHF plans to fully rehabilitate this historic property in the near future.

SUMMARY: VSA is responsible for the daily operations of the retail store at the And Still We Rise experience: selling admission tickets, retail merchandise and providing information about historic Galveston, and helping to ensure that museum visitors and retail customers receive a positive experience from their first point of contact.

POSITION TITLE: Visitor Service Associate (VSA) – Galveston Historic Seaport. Part-time (3-4 days per week), Hourly Wage.

REPORTS TO: Gift Shop Manager

JOB SUMMARY: VSA is responsible for the daily operations of the retail store at the Galveston Historic Seaport, Home of the 1877 Tallship ELISSA: selling admission tickets, retail merchandise, and providing information about historic Galveston and helping to ensure that museum visitors and retail customers receive a positive experience from their first point of contact.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Handles cash, checks, credit card sales, keeping prompt and accurate records of transactions.
  • Assists visitors with admissions to all GHF properties.
  • Assists visitors with retail purchases. Greets customers and ascertain what each customer needs or wants.
  • Maintains knowledge of current sales and promotions and security practices.
  • Recommends, selects, and helps locate or obtain merchandise based on customer needs and desires.
  • Answer questions regarding the store and its merchandise.
  • Describes merchandise and explains use, operation to customers.
  • Monitors appearance of the store; fills brochure racks, restocks retail merchandise, performs light housekeeping as needed to maintain appearance.
  • Opens and closes as needed, including preparation of daily cash report and balancing of cash at the end of business workday.

SUMMARY: VSA is responsible for the daily operations of the retail store at the 1892 Bishop’s Palace: selling admission tickets, retail merchandise, and providing information about historic Galveston and helping to ensure that museum visitors and retail customers receive a positive experience from their first point of contact.

JOB DUTIES – Duties include but are not limited to:

MARINE BIOLOGIST

TITLE: Marine Biologist

REPORTS TO: Port Captain, Galveston Historic Seaport (GHS)

JOB SUMMARY: The Marine Biologist is responsible for the Marine Biology Tour aboard the vessel SEAGULL II. This includes educating tour groups about the local wildlife and handling and discussing any specimens caught during the program. This position requires reasonable physical fitness and strength. This is a part-time, hourly position. Weekend work may be required.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Provides educational tours of the marine life found in Galveston Harbor while aboard tour boat Seagull II. This may include mammals, fish, birds, invertebrates…etc.
  • Carefully handles marine creatures pulled from the collection net as part of the program.
  • Aids Seagull II deckhand in deployment and reeling in of collection net.
  • Returns all wildlife back to their original habitat at the conclusion of the program.
  • Responsible for maintaining a TPWD Education display permit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Education Coordinator.

EDUCATION: Minimum B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Marine Biology.

SKILLS: Strong background in working with the public and speaking skills. Ability to work independently, as well as with colleagues, staff, volunteers, and passengers. Basic computer proficiency.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 1-year experience in teaching, research, or education in the field.

REQUIREMENTS: Must pass a background check and be comfortable with public speaking, handling marine life, and working on a boat. Must know how to speak to children’s groups as well as adult groups. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

ABOUT GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION

GHF was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life, and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.
